Kacie Sowell (Ventura, Calif.) has been named the first Western Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week (Nov. 5-11) for the 2012-13 season. This is also her first WAC Player of the Week honor, as well as the team’s first. The conference office will name a Player of the Week each Monday throughout the season.

"Kacie is a strong, solid, versatile player who is a winner on and off the court," said head coach Joan Bonvicini.

As the team battled back versus Pacific on Nov. 9 to narrowly fall, 71-70, Sowell recorded her first double-double of the season (19 pts, 11 rbs), also adding three steals. She shot 8-for-13 (61.5 percent) from the field and 3-for-4 (75 percent) from the free-throw line.

This season, Sowell hopes to build upon her success from 2011-12, as she finished with the team lead in scoring (14.3 ppg, 10.2 rpg), shooting 56.6 percent from the field (fifth in NCAA Division I). She also recorded 18 double-doubles, tied for 10th in NCAA Division I, and was named the Independent Women’s Basketball Player of the Year.

Other nominees include: Emiko Smith (Denver), Louisiana Tech (Tayasha Anderson), Classye James (San Jose State), Diamond Ford (Texas State).
