The Seattle U men’s tennis team continued action Saturday at
the Boise State Appleton Classic, advancing to semifinal contests in two brackets
of the tournament held in Boise, Idaho.
In the Blue Flight consolation bracket, Flavio Malagutti
(Rio Claro, Brazil) advanced to the semifinals. Malagutti was due to face
teammate Jason Bediones (Kent, Wash.) in the round of 16, but Malagutti
advanced in a walkover over his fellow Redhawk. Malagutti then played a tight
quarterfinal matchup with Jake Knox of Idaho, winning in two lengthened sets,
7-6(6), 7-5.
Also in the Blue
Flight consolation, Kyle Rapp (Encinitas, Calif.) fell 6-3, 7-5 to Eduardo
Bringold of Eastern Washington, and Gus Orlando (Sacramento, Calif.) lost his
match against Portland’s Jackson Martin 6-3, 6-2.
In the main bracket of the Orange Flight, Will Topp
(Olympia, Wash.) saw his run ended by Portland’s Stefan Micov in the
quarterfinals. Micov overcame the SU freshman by a score of 6-2, 6-3.
In the consolation bracket of the Orange Flight, Zach Kosanke (Bellevue, Wash.) won an opening-round contest against Montana’s Mike
Facey in three sets, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, but
then lost the quarterfinal match against Nate Gross of Idaho State 7-6, 2-6, (10-5).
Wrapping up the Redhawks’ singles play,
Kevin Lynch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) played a three-set contest with Charles
Norman of Idaho State, but fell in the tiebreak, losing the match by a score of
6-1, 0-6, 11-9.
Topp and Kosanke teamed up to advance in the consolation of
the Orange Doubles Flight, beating 9-7 Jamin and Smith of Gonzaga 9-7.
Rapp and Malagutti were knocked out of the main Blue Doubles
Flight with an 8-6 loss to Montana’s Facey and Braun, while the SU duo of
Orlando and Ian Clare (Sachse, Texas) lost in the Blue Doubles consolation by a score of 8-0 to
Drost and Macfarland, also from Montana.
The final day of the Boise State Appleton Classic will take
place Sunday, October 6 with matches beginning at 9:00 a.m. in Boise, Idaho.
