Seattle University women's soccer (6-5-1, 1-0-1) faced Texas State (4-8-1, 1-1-0) to finish out their first conference weekend and came away with the win, 2-0.
"I was very happy to see us score two goals and get the shutout on the road, especially after a tough OT game on Friday," said head coach Julie Woodward. "I think the team did a great job of grinding out a win. Julia Moravec had a solid game and her first collegiate goal. Ava Ames also brought some much needed energy to the field."
A back and forth contest for the first 20-plus minutes, each team took shots but neither was able to convert until the 28th minute. Julia Moravec (Spokane, Wash.) took a shot that went over the goalkeepers hand into the back of the net for her first career goal. The deciding factor in the game, this was also Moravec's first career game-winning goal.
In the 72nd minute, Monique Escalera (Riverside, Calif.) scored her first goal of the season on an assist by Stephanie Verdoia (Salt Lake City, Utah) to insure the win, giving the Redhawks the 2-0 lead. This proved to be the final margin as the SU defense was able to preserve the shutout.
Renee Vandermause (Madison, Wisc.) and Escalera led Seattle U with two shots apiece. Overall, the Redhawks outshot the Bobcats, 11-9. Heather Thomas (Woodinville, Wash.) started her second straight game for the Redhawks.
Brianna Smallidge (Port Orchard, Wash.) got the complete game shutout in goal for the Redhawks, recording three saves in the win. Natalie Gardini also played all 90 minutes in goal for the Bobcats, recording three saves and allowing two goals.
Seattle U returns home on Sunday, Oct. 7 to host Idaho in their conference home opener at 12 p.m. The match will also be the team's annual Pink Game, with proceeds from ticket and t-shirt sales, as well special raffles and silent auction proceeds going to benefit Susan G. Komen Puget Sound. To purchase tickets, visit the Championship Field ticket gate starting 60 minutes before kickoff or call the Redhawk ticket office at (206) 398-GOSU (4678).
