The Seattle University women’s tennis team began their
weekend at the Boise State Jack Taylor Classic Friday, claiming four wins on
the first day of the tournament held in Boise, Idaho.
Anna Lambert (Spokane, Wash.) tallied a win in the main draw
of the singles Blue Flight, taking town Wena Tsan of Montana State in a tight
match, 7-6(4), 7-5. Later in the day, she met Utah State’s Mackenzie Davis in
the round of 16, falling in straight 6-1 sets. Lambert will begin play in the
second-round loss consolation Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
The Redhawks garnered two more wins in the Orange Flight,
with victories from Sarah Lucas (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Corinne Wurden (Poulsbo,
Wash.). Lucas faced Idaho’s Ale Loranzo
in the first round, prevailing 6-3, 6-1. Lucas, however, followed up the win
with a loss to Laurence Pelchat from Montana 6-4, 6-2. Wurden claimed a 6-2,
6-0 first-round win over Rocio Norena of Eastern Washington, but fell in the
round of 16 to host Boise State’s Megan LaLone 6-3, 6-0. Both Lucas and Wurden
will take part on the Orange Flight’s second-round loss consolation Saturday
morning.
Kristen James (Lubbock, Texas) also claimed a win Friday
despite first-round loss to Montana’s Mackenzie Rozell. James bounced back and
won in the Orange Bracket consolation, defeating Carly Lloyd of Weber State
6-0, 6-1.
Gabriella Weissmann (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Lindsey Newman
(Freeland, Wash.) joined Lambert in the Blue Flight. Weissmann experienced a
first-round loss to Kelsey Knight of Eastern Washington 6-1, 7-5, and will
start play in the quarterfinal of the consolation bracket Saturday morning.
Newman also experienced a first-round loss, dropping a 6-2, 6-3 decision to BYU’s
Aubrey Paul. Newman will also participate in the flight’s consolation Saturday.
Rounding out the team’s singles lineup is Dayna Bennett
(Issaquah, Wash.). Bennett squared off against Utah State’s Hilary Hays in the
first round of the White Flight, falling 6-3, 6-1. She then faced Idaho State’s
Svenja Tegtmeier in the consolation bracket, losing 6-0, 6-2.
Three doubles teams also took the court Friday. Lambert and
Newman teamed up and faced Boise State’s team of Basil and Watson, falling 8-5
in the Blue Flight matchup. Weissmann and Lucas fell in the first round of the
Orange Flight 8-5 to Lopez and Crum of Montana State. In the White Flight,
Wurden and James dropped an 8-3 decision to a team of Abby Stevens of Colorado
State and Fiona Mok of Boise State. The duos of Lambert and Newman and
Weissmann and Lucas will start consolation play Saturday afternoon, while Wurden
and James will play Sunday morning.
The Boise State Jack Taylor Classic will resume Saturday,
September 30 with the first matches starting at 8:30 a.m.
