Seattle University women’s rowing head coach Portia McGee has announced the team’s 2012-13 schedule, their first as an NCAA Division I varsity program.

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to race so many quality programs in our inaugural season of varsity women’s rowing,” said McGee. “It speaks volumes to the depth of rowing in the Northwest, that we can face such great competition both on our home water and within the region. The rowing community in this area has reached out and welcomed our program into their racing schedules. We know we have a lot of work to do before we face our opponents this spring. Our racing goal this year is to expose ourselves to great competition, race hard, and experience the thrill of competing in NCAA Division I women’s rowing.”

The team will have two fall races, starting the season on Oct. 28 at 10 a.m. at the Portland Fall Classic in Portland, Ore. The Portland Pilots, like the Redhawks, are a new team in just their second year as a varsity program.

On Nov. 4, Seattle U will compete in the Head of the Lake at nearby University of Washington’s home course, the Montlake Cut. They will also compete here to open the spring on Mar. 30 in the Husky Open, as well as to close the season on May 4 in the Opening Day Regatta.

The Redhawks will follow the Husky Open with two consecutive road trips, one to the east, to face Gonzaga on Apr. 6 in Spokane, and one to the south, to compete in the Covered Bridge Regatta on Apr. 13 at Dexter Lake in Lowell, Ore.

On Apr. 20, Seattle U will host their first NCAA Division I home rowing match versus the University of Portland on their home course, starting at the Seattle Rowing Center. The race will start at 8 a.m.

The final road trip of the season will be to the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships on Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. on Apr. 27-28.
