The Seattle U men’s tennis team continued play at the EWU
Fall Invite Saturday with one doubles pair advancing to a bracket final and one
player advancing to his bracket’s semi-final at the tournament held in Cheney, Wash.
Kevin Lynch (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and Jason Bediones
(Kent, Wash.) advanced to the final of the doubles draw consolation with two
wins Saturday. They quickly dispatched Montana’s team of Caruk and Drost 8-2 in
the first match of morning then beat Triance and Cochrane of Portland State 8-3
just an hour later. They will face Idaho’s Fichtel and Knox for the bracket’s
final at 9:00 a.m. Sunday.
Kyle Rapp (Encinitas, Calif.) is still alive in the white
flight’s consolation bracket after winning two matches today. He defeated
Portland State’s William Risenhoover 6-2, 7-5 in his first match then rolled
through Nate Chart, also of Portland State, 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals to
reach the semis.
SU’s team of Will
Topp (Olympia, Wash.)and Zach Kosanke (Bellevue, Wash.) won their first match
of the day, a doubles draw round of 16 match against Gonzaga’s Mosquera and
Ismath. Topp and Kosanke won that match 8-3, but they lost their quarterfinal
contest to Montana’s Warren and Vaughn by a similar score of 8-3.
Topp also played a singles match, facing Gonzaga’s Levin
Guillermo in the red flight’s quarterfinal round. Topp won the first set, but
was forced to retire in the second due to injury, allowing Guillermo to advance
to the semifinals.
In the red flight’s consolation bracket, Kosanke faced off
against Mike Facey of Montana in the bracket’s quarterfinals. Konsanke hung
tough the first set before falling 7-5, then lost the second set 6-2, resulting
in elimination from the tournament.
Flavio Malagutti (Rio Claro, Brazil) also fell in the
quarterfinals of the red flight’s consolation, losing to Eastern Washington’s
Tomas Aranguiz 6-0, 6-4.
Gus Orlando (Sacramento, Calif.) was still alive in the main
bracket of the white flight to begin the day but lost to Joey Brandt of Gonzaga
6-4, 6-0 to see an end to his first collegiate tournament.
Rounding out the SU lineup, Malagutti and Ian Clare (Sachse,
Texas) were eliminated from the doubles draw consolation bracket after the
Redhawks’ duo was forced to retire due to injury. Also in the bracket, the duo
of Rapp and Orlando lost Fitchel and Knox of Idaho in the semifinals, ending
their run in the consolation bracket.
The Redhawks finish play at the EWU Fall Invite Sunday,
September 23. Doubles matches begin at 9:00 a.m., while the first singles
competitions are slated for a 10:00 start.
