In their second straight match versus a top-25 team, Seattle University women’s soccer (4-5-0) played great defense through the majority of the match, but a couple of late defensive miscues by the Redhawks and their lack of offense output led to a 3-0 Portland victory.

Melissa Busque (St. Bruno, Quebec, Canada) took the first shot of the game in the sixth minute, but it went wide left. This was followed by three shots by the Pilots (6-1-1), the last resulting in a goal by Micaela Capelle, assisted by Amanda Frisbie, to put them ahead, 1-0.

The Redhawks held the Pilots to the one goal lead until the 79th minute when Kaila Cameli, again assisted by Frisbie, scored to give them the 2-0 lead.

Seven minutes later, in the 86th minute, Cameli scored her second goal of the game, assisted by Capelle, putting the Pilots ahead, 3-0, which proved to be the final margin of the game.

Stephanie Verdoia (Salt Lake City, Utah) led the Redhawks with four shots, followed by Julia Besagno (Maple Valley, Wash.) with three. Capelle took a team-leading five shots for the Pilots. Portland outshot Seattle U, 16-10, over the match.

Brianna Smallidge (Port Orchard, Wash.) got the start in goal for Seattle U, playing all 90 minutes and making four saves. Nichole Downing started in goal for the Pilots, making two saves in the complete game shutout.

Seattle U returns home for their final non-conference match, hosting Utah Valley on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 12 p.m. at Championship Field.
