Uli Steidl Wins Masters Division at Boston Marathon

Seattle University assistant cross country and track and field coach Uli Steidl won the Masters Division at the 116th Boston Marathon Monday, crossing the finish line in Copley Square 15th overall and fifth among American men.

Steidl, who just recently turned 40 years of age and earned American citizenship two years ago, posted a time of 2:23.08, almost one minute ahead of 42-year-old Franklin Tenorio of Boulder, Colo. Tenorio started the race ahead of Steidl, but Steidl started closing the gap in the second half of the 26.2-mile course, passing Tenorio somewhere between the 35-kilometer and 40-kilometer checkpoints.

This is Steidl's second top-15 finish at the Boston Marathon, as he crossed the finish line in 12th place during the 2007 Boston Marathon. He has previously won the Seattle Marathon eight times and the Vancouver Marathon on five occasions, plus he still holds the record for the Portland Marathon, winning the 1997 edition of the race in 2:17.21.

Steidl will rejoin the Seattle University track and field team as it continues the 2012 outdoor season, which will culminate with participation in the Great West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, hosted by Houston Baptist University in Humble, Texas, May 10-12.
