SEATTLE - Declan McGlynn scored in the 93rd minute to cap a late comeback victory for Seattle University men’s soccer as the Redhawks defeated Utah Valley, 2-1 in an overtime thriller. The Redhawks extended their unbeaten run to nine games going into the final heat of the WAC regular season with the victory at Championship Field.
The win books Seattle U a spot in the 2019 WAC Tournament in Colorado Springs, Colo., beginning Nov. 13.
Noe Meza and McGlynn added their eighth goals of the campaign respectively with Meza contributing the assist on McGlynn’s winner. SU sits atop of the WAC standings and remains undefeated in conference play.
In the 85th minute, Meza leveled the match from the penalty spot following a foul on midfielder Jesse Ortiz. The senior forward rifled a shot to the left side to send the game into overtime.
Going down 1-0 in the 17th minute, the Redhawks (10-3-3, 7-0-1 WAC) bombarded the Wolverines’ box with cross after cross, however, they couldn’t capitalize in the first 45 minutes of play.
A straight red card to a UVU (8-6-1, 5-3-0 WAC) defender late in the first half allowed Seattle U to ease some of the high-pressing tactics implemented by the visitors. Coach Pete Fewing’s men strung consistent passes around the park with Ortiz being the attacking spark going forward in the second half.
“That’s a good team,” said Fewing. “We have to give Utah Valley credit, they scored a good goal and did exactly what a smart team and coach would do going down to ten men.”
The Redhawks carried their attacking momentum of the second half into overtime, quickly finding the winner from the left-foot of McGlynn. Meza used a burst of speed down the right wing to drop a cross to the open McGlynn, who made no mistake to end the match 2-1 in favor of the Redhawks.
“The fact is we want to win the game and we could feel right from the beginning that we were going to come out and put it away.”
Seattle U rolls on to Texas for a two-game road trip beginning at Incarnate Word on Friday, Nov. 1. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. Pacific.
