SEATTLE – Seattle University softball beat Santa Clara, 6-5 in eight innings, in the final game of the Redhawk Invitational Sunday. Cherise Silvan led the offense with three hits in the walk-off win at Logan Field.
SU (25-14) controlled much of the game, but the Broncos rallied with four runs in the seventh to force extra innings. Carley Nance shut down SCU in the top of the eighth and then started the bottom of the frame at second base. Silvan bunted and a Bronco error on the throw to first allowed Nance to come around to score the game-winning run.
Nance and Shianne Smith were stellar in short stints in the circle, but Santa Clara came back late, as Nance re-entered and claimed the win with two more innings of strong relief work.
The SU offense got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Kaylee Ree tallied a bunt single and took second on an error. She moved up a base on a Nance fly ball and then Silvan brought Ree with a single to center.
Ree then singled and against advanced on a Nance flyout. Silvan came through with another RBI single to center to score Ree. Silvan hustled into second on the throw home and then scored when Breanna Timmons singled, making it 5-0.
The visitors scored a run in the fifth, but the Redhawks’ pitchers limited the Broncos until the seventh.
Silvan compiled three hits and a pair of RBIs, while Choate and Ree had two hits apiece. Nance improved to 13-6 on the year, throwing five innings and giving up three hits and one run. She struck out four batters Sunday.
Seattle U heads to Utah Valley for a three-game WAC series next weekend.
