SEATTLE – With its back up against the wall, Seattle University volleyball responded in thrilling fashion Saturday afternoon in the Redhawk Center, taking down CSU Bakersfield in four sets to clinch the final berth in the 2018 Western Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Redhawks (11-18, 4-12 WAC) dropped the first set, 25-23, to the 'Runners (14-15, 7-9 WAC), then rallied for a huge 25-13 win in the second set, followed by 25-18 and 25-20 wins in the third and fourth to capture their second straight win and extend their season.
"It was really great to see the seniors perform so well in both matches this weekend, and then to also get the help of the whole team," said Head Coach James Finley. "Tijana was phenomenal on defense and really kept us in the game. This was such a great team effort. Everyone was determined to find a way to be successful."
Seniors Shae Harris, Maja Stojanovic and Mila Duarte led the way yet again, prior to being honored post match for all of their accomplishments during their respective four-year careers. Harris dished 42 assists to go along with 15 digs for her ninth double-double of the season. Duarte collected 11 kills and Stojanovic added eight kills and four blocks.
CSUB was led by Desiree Sukhov's 13 kills and 14 digs. Mattison DeGarmo chopped in 12 kills as the 'Runners hit just .173 for the match.
"I like how calm we played and the belief we had that we could win," Finely said. "Moving forward into the tournament next week, we'll continue to focus on the little things, being in the present, staying intense and keeping this same sense of urgency. Every ball is a championship ball."
The Redhawks have secured the sixth seed in next week's WAC Tournament, which begins Thanskgiving Day - Thursday, Nov. 22 - in Bakersfield, Calif. Seattle U will face the third-seeded Kansas City at 7 p.m. in the Icardo Center on the CSUB campus. The winner will advance to face second-seed New Mexico State on Friday.
