LAS CRUCES N.M. – (May 10) Seattle University softball concluded action at the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament with a 7-4 defeat against Grand Canyon Thursday afternoon. Madison Cathcart went 3-3 with a home run, a double and a walk in the elimination game at the NM State Softball Complex.

“It’s tough way to go out here,” said Coach Geoff Hirai. “We’ve had a record-setting year and I’m proud of how our team played.”

Cathcart homered in the top of the first to give SU (33-23) a 2-0 advantage. The Lopes (27-22) eventually took the lead, scoring three times in the fourth. They added two more in the fifth, grabbing a 5-2 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Maddy Kristjanson singled through the left side to spark a rally. Bailey Thompson reached on an error to put two on with no outs. A Nicole Bolasky bunt single resulted in a run, as GCU threw the ball away to make it 5-3. Bolasky followed with a steal of second, claiming the Redhawks’ single-season record with 27 stolen bases in 2018.

After Bolasky advanced to third on a fielder’s choice, Sara Dominguez came through with a pinch-hit single to center, driving in Bolasky and pulling SU within a run. Ally Choate laced a liner to left, but the Lopes made the play to end the frame.

Grand Canyon answered with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, going up, 7-4. In the seventh, Cathcart doubled with one out, but GCU found two outs and pulled out the contest.

Kristjanson had two hits, while Choate had a hit and a walk.

Seattle U has set a Division I-program record with 33 wins in 2018. It tallied two WAC sweeps for the first time ever and placed seven Redhawks on the All-WAC teams, leading the conference.
