BOX SCORE

KANSAS CITY – (Jan. 13) Seattle University women’s basketball won, 62-58, at Kansas City Saturday afternoon. The Redhawks outscored the ‘Roos, 23-16, in the fourth quarter to take the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) game at the Swinney Recreation Center.

”It was a tense, well-played game,” said Coach Suzy Barcomb. “We were fortunate to come away with a win. We changed things up in the fourth quarter and let Jacinta roam around the middle of the court and she hit some big shots for us.”

The hosts grabbed a 45-39 advantage early in the fourth, but SU continued its trend of playing its best late in games this season. Jacinta Beckley hit a three-pointer and Kamira Sanders sank two foul shots to get the Redhawks within a point.

UMKC went back up, 47-44, but Beckley responded with a jumper and block on the other end. The senior followed with another jumper to put Seattle U ahead by a point at the 4:16 mark. After the ‘Roos tied it, Kallin Spiller dished out to Madeline Dopplick, who splashed a trey to make it 51-48 with 3:01 remaining.

After a Kansas City bucket, Beckley scored again. UMKC answered, but the Redhawks broke the press and Beckley found Spiller for a layup and a 55-52 advantage. SU closed with enough free throws to maintain its margin, and a late ‘Roo three went wide, allowing the Redhawks to sweep the weekend.

Beckley finished with 18 points, six rebounds, and three blocked shots in 38 minutes. Spiller put up 15 points and 11 boards for her second double-double of the season. Alexis Montgomery tallied 13 points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Kamira Sanders added seven points, four boards, and four assists in 39 minutes.

After a UMKC three opened scoring, Montgomery swished a jumper to get SU on the board. A Beckley putback and a Dopplick trey put the Redhawks up, 7-5, with 4:58 showing on the clock. Sanders scored and then Spiller found Ashlyn Lewey for a layup as the period continued. Baskets by Montgomery and Spiller kept Seattle U ahead and then Montgomery sank a trey in the final minute of the frame. A late ‘Roo bucket made it 18-14 after 10 minutes.

The hosts scored first in the second period, but Montgomery answered with a jumper. McKenzi Williams set up a Spiller hoop to give SU a 22-16 advantage with 6:57 left. Kansas City tried to rally, but Spiller scored inside twice as the margin grew to eight points midway through the quarter. Beckley got rolling late in the half, draining a pair of three-pointers and swatting a ‘Roo lay-in attempt as the Redhawks gained a 32-25 halftime lead.

The third quarter was a slog, with neither side able to convert with consistency. Sanders hit a jumper and Spiller scored in the lane, as SU tried to survive a ‘Roo run. Montgomery converted on a layup late in the frame as the Redhawks entered the fourth down, 42-39.

The Redhawks host New Mexico State on Thursday, Jan. 18. The WAC home opener is set for a 6 p.m. tip-off at the Connolly Complex.
