SEATTLE – (Dec. 13) Seattle University men's basketball outscored visiting Saint Martin's 44-24 in the second half Wednesday night in the Connolly Complex, pulling away for an 88-72 victory.
With the win, the Redhawks remain perfect on their home court this season at 6-0.
Offense was no issue for the Redhawks from the get-go as they shot better than 68 percent from the field in the first half. But the Saints were even hotter. The visitors hit 11-of-16 (68.8 percent) from deep in the opening frame on their way to a 48-44 lead at the break.
But the shooting display would not last. The Saints' Jordan Kitchen hit a three two minutes in to put the visitor ahead by six, 54-48.
Seattle U would answer with a 5-0 run while holding the Saints scoreless for nearly three minutes. With the Redhawks trailing by one, Jordan Hill scored on a left-handed layup, giving Seattle U its first lead since the 4:53 mark of the first half. Fouled on the play, he would sink the and-one free throw for a 60-58 advantage.
On the ensuing possession, Hill fed Aaron Nettles for a three, putting the Redhawks up five. Seattle U would never trail again.
"Credit to Saint Martin's in the first half, what a great shooting team," said Head Coach Jim Hayford. "We got refocused at halftime and really knuckled down on defense. Offensively, we played very well in both halves."
A layup by Saint Martin's Tavian Henderson with 6:09 to play would be the Saints' final field goal of the night. They would score just two points in the final six minutes - a pair of Jared Mathews free throws.
Luke Chavez led Saint Martin's with 17 points while Mathews chipped in 11.
Seattle U's nine-game homestretch continues Saturday, Dec. 16 against the University of Portland. Tip-off from KeyArena is set for 7 p.m. The game will stream live on the WAC Digital Network and can be heard live on KTTH 770 AM.
