SEATTLE – (Nov. 9) Three Redhawks recorded double-digit kills as Seattle University volleyball completed the home-and-home season sweep of Western Athletic Conference rival Chicago State with a 3-1 victory Thursday night in the Connolly Complex.
Katarina Marinkovic led the way with 20 kills while Rachel Stark had 11 kills and Maja Stojanovic had 10. Shae Harris finished the night with 52 assists while Tijana Milojevic collected 32 digs as the Redhawks officially secured a spot in the WAC Tournament next week.
The Cougars (10-20, 1-12 WAC) were paced by Paige Eyring’s 16 kills. Carmen Carvajal and Lauryn Dela Cruz chipped in 12 kills each.
Seattle U won the first set, 25-22, following three lead changes and 13 tie scores. The Redhawks (10-16, 6-7 WAC) stumbled in the second set, hitting just .083 as the Cougars evened the set score with a 25-19 win.
But the Redhawks’ efficient attack returned in the third set as they hit a match-high .361 to break free from a 16-16 tie to win 25-19. The match seemed in hand with Seattle U leading 21-15 in the fourth, but the Cougars would push the score into extra points. After briefly falling into a one-point hole three times, a big block by Marinkovic and Stojanovic knotted the score at 28-28.
The Redhawk block came up big again on the next point as Stojanovic and Harris denied a kill attempt from Carvajal. Marinkovic would put the match away on a kill as Seattle U prevailed, 30-28.
The regular-season concludes on Saturday afternoon as Seattle U hosts Kansas City at 1 p.m. in the Connolly Complex. Senior Claire Johnston will be honored in a brief ceremony prior to the match.
