KANSAS CITY (April 21) – The Seattle University softball team split a doubleheader at UMKC on Friday. The Redhawks won the opener, 10-4, before falling, 9-7, in the nightcap of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) set.

"We fought hard today," said Coach Geoff Hirai. "We'll make adjustments and fight for the series tomorrow."

The first game was even at 2 entering the fifth inning. With one out, Alyson Matriotti hit a bunt single and advanced to second on an error. Kayla Gonzales followed with a pinch-hit double, scoring Matriotti to give SU (16-27, 5-6 WAC) a 3-2 lead. A Paige Bouska base hit drove in Gonzales. Kaylee Ree then singled to bring up Madison Cathcart. The freshman homered to stretch the margin, as the Redhawks took a 7-2 advantage.

After the hosts scored twice in the bottom of the fifth, Seattle U tacked on a run in the sixth. Cherise Silvan, Maddy Kristjanson, and Emma Mitchell each singled to create a run and make it 8-4. In the seventh frame, Cathcart doubled to lead off. With one out, Sara Dominguez blasted a home run to right field, capping SU’s terrific game at the plate.

UMKC (15-32, 5-6 WAC) scored first, going ahead, 1-0, after an inning. SU quickly replied, though, as Dominguez singled and then scored on a Kristjanson double. With the ‘Roos up, 2-1, Savannah Loomis hammered a solo homer to center in the top of the fourth, tying the contest.

SU pounded out a season-high 17 hits. Bouska and Dominguez both went 3-4. Dominguez drove in two runs and scored twice. Cathcart, Kristjanson, and Matriotti each had a pair of hits. Andie Larkins got the win, throwing five innings and allowing six hits and four runs. Alyssa Reuble threw two scoreless innings of relief for the Redhawks.

In the second contest, UMKC went up, 1-0, after three innings. Seattle U answered with a three-run fourth to take the lead. Loomis led off with a double, and after an out, Gonzales homered to center on a 2-2 pitch. Matriotti then singled with two outs and stole second base. A Nicole Bolasky single brought in Matriotti as the Redhawks took a 3-1 lead. The home side responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame, however.

With the ‘Roos ahead, 8-3, SU came up with three runs in the sixth to pressure the hosts. Kristjanson walked and then Matriotti’s bunt single put Redhawks at first and second. Bolasky advanced the runners with a groundout and then Bouska singled to left. A ‘Roo error brought in two runs to trim the deficit. Ree’s sacrifice fly plated Bouska and made it an 8-6 score.

UMKC homered in its half of the sixth, but the Redhawks continued to work. Singles by Kristjanson and Matriotti brought the tying the run to the plate with one out. After a groundout moved the runners up a bag, Bouska singled, scoring Kristjanson. However, UMKC tagged out Matriotti on the bases, ending the game.

Bouska and Matriotti both finished with three hits. Bolasky and Loomis each had two hits, while Kristjanson tallied a hit and a walk.

The teams will play once more on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m. Pacific.
