SAN DIEGO BOX | SANTA CLARA BOX

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (March 25) – Seattle University softball defeated Santa Clara, 5-2, on the second day of the Gaucho Classic Saturday. The Redhawks also fell, 7-5, to San Diego earlier in the day at UC Santa Barbara.

"It was nice to see us bounce back from a tough loss," said Coach Geoff Hirai. "We continue to hit the ball and if we just clean up a couple things, we will be ready for conference play."

Seattle U (10-21) and Santa Clara were scoreless entering the third inning. SU’s Maddy Kristjanson led off with a base hit to right field. Alyson Matriotti then singled. Nicole Bolasky got aboard via error, allowing two runs to score. With one out, Kaylee Ree tripled to right center to plate Bolasky and give SU a 3-0 lead. After another out, Jessica Flanagan singled, scoring Ree.

The Broncos scored a pair of runs to inch closer, but the Redhawks tacked on a run in the top of the seventh frame. Matriotti led off with a single and Bolasky hit one of her own. Bouska then singled, eventually resulting in runners at the corners with one out. Ree hit an RBI single to right for a 5-2 margin.

Alyssa Reuble allowed a run in the bottom half of the inning, but kept the Broncos from any more damage, picking up her second victory of the weekend. She went all seven innings, giving up eight hits and two earned runs.

Ree had a 3-3 outing with two RBIs, a walk, and a run scored. Matriotti added two hits and a pair of runs.

Against USD, Seattle U scored first, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Kristjanson singled with one out and Cherise Silvan drove her in with a triple. Sara Dominguez continued the burst with an infield single that scored Silvan.

San Diego came back with three runs in the third and added two more in the fifth to grab a 5-2 advantage. In the bottom of the fifth, Bouska singled and moved up to second on a passed ball. Ree reached on an error and later in the frame, Savannah Loomis hit a sac fly to bring in Bouska.

The Toreros put up two more runs in the sixth, but the Redhawks fought back again in their half of the inning. With two outs, Matriotti and Bolasky each singled. Bouska followed with a double to left, scoring both runners and making it a 7-5 contest. SU was unable to score in the seventh, though, as USD held on for the victory.

Bouska went 3-4 with two RBIs and a run scored. Bolasky had two hits and a run. Silvan notched a hit, a walk, an RBI, and a run.

The Redhawks close action at the Gaucho Classic tomorrow. They will take on Santa Clara at 9 a.m.
