BELLEVUE, Wash. – A close contest early, Seattle U baseball (26-15, 13-3 WAC) was able to plate late runs to earn a 7-4 victory vs. UT Rio Grande Valley (18-19, 7-6 WAC) in the Western Athletic Conference series opener.

The Vaqueros took an early one-run lead in the second on a sac fly before Seattle U jumped on top, 2-1, in the bottom of the frame on the combination of a Griffin Andreychuk (Nanaimo, B.C., Canada) single and a passed ball. In the fifth, UTRGV would tie the game, 2-2, on a sac bunt and gained a 3-2 lead in the sixth on an Austin Oakes RBI single to right center.

Responding in the bottom of the sixth, Seattle U regained the lead, 5-3, this time for good, on a Curtis Perrin (Vancouver, Wash.) pinch-hit three-run double. Despite UTRGV pulling within one, 5-4, in the seventh on a sac fly, SU scored two more in the eighth on a Dalton Hurd (Bend, Ore.) single and a wild pitch to secure the win.

At the plate, Hurd, Sheldon Stober (Kent, Wash.), and Brock Carpenter (Milton, Wash.) each tallied two hits apiece for Seattle U. On the mound, Ted Hammond (Shoreline, Wash.) picked up the win, improving to 7-2, while Zach Wolf (Dana Hills, Calif.) earned his seventh save of the season.

Seattle U looks for the series win vs. UTRGV in game two on Saturday, Apr. 30 at 5 p.m. at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue.
