Seattle University baseball (23-14, 10-3 WAC) scored five in the final three innings but could not overcome the deficit as they fell, 9-8, in the series opener at Utah Valley (22-16, 8-5 WAC).

Jeffrey Morgan (Auburn, Wash.) gave SU a 1-0 lead on a RBI double in the second before Utah Valley tied it up in the bottom of the frame as Jake Atkinson hit an infield single.

The Wolverines’ third inning made much of the difference as they scored six runs on six hits and one SU error to take a 7-1 lead through three.

Dalton Hurd (Bend, Ore.) got one back for the Redhawks in the fourth on an RBI single and would trail, 9-3, going into the seventh after Morgan scored following a leadoff triple in the sixth.

Michael McCann (Vancouver, Wash.) and Sheldon Stober (Kent, Wash.) scored two on a trio of hits in the seventh to pull SU within four, 9-5, and Stober would drive in three on a home run to right field in the eighth as the Redhawks trailed by one, 9-8.

SU left one runner on base in the ninth but couldn’t push any additional runs across the plate to give Utah Valley a one-run win in the series opener.

Sean Sutton (Coeur d’Alene, Idaho) led the Redhawks at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI while Stober and Morgan each tallied two hits.

First pitch of game two between the Redhawks and Wolverines is set for Saturday, Apr. 23 at 5 pm PT.
