Seattle University baseball (23-12) scored two early runs and, despite allowing Washington (19-13) to come within a run two different times, used stellar defense to earn a 3-2 win.

Griffin Andreychuk (Nanaimo, B.C., Canada) hit a solo home run in the first inning on the first pitch he faced before Jake Taylor (Boise, Idaho) put the Redhawks up 2-0, bringing home Jack Reisinger (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) on a RBI double down the left field line the following inning.

In the fifth, Washington plated their first run on a Levi Jordan single up the middle before SU bumped up their lead, 3-1, in the bottom of the frame on a Michael McCann (Vancouver, Wash.) single to right center. Jack Meggs brought the Huskies within one once more, 3-2, in the fifth on a sac fly.

Impressive defense late in the game held off UW as the Redhawks stranded a Husky on third in the seventh and the bases loaded in the eighth to preserve the victory.

Seven different Redhawks recorded a hit in the win while Andreychuk’s home run was his first of the season.

On the mound, Jake Prizina (Sparks, Nev.) picked up his first career win, striking out three while allowing only one run in five innings pitched. Nick Meservey (Scottsdale, Ariz.) picked up his first save of the season, retiring the final two batters.

The Redhawks face Portland on Wednesday, Apr. 20 at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma with first pitch set for 6 pm. SU travels to Utah Valley for a three game Western Athletic Conference series this weekend.
