Earning an early lead for the second straight game, Seattle University baseball (22-11, 10-1 WAC) tacked on late runs to lift them over Grand Canyon (15-18, 4-7 WAC). The win ensured their fourth straight series victory while also keeping Seattle U in sole possession of first place in the Western Athletic Conference.

Sheldon Stober (Kent, Wash.) hit a two-out homerun in the first before Brock Carpenter (Milton, Wash.) scored on the combination of a Jeffrey Morgan (Auburn, Wash.) single and a throwing error by the GCU pitcher.

The ‘Lopes pushed home their only run of the game in the fifth on a passed ball to cut the Seattle U lead to one run, 2-1, but the Redhawks plated two more in the eighth on a Morgan single before Dalton Hurd (Bend, Ore.) reached base on a fielder’s choice, bringing home Jack Reisinger (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.).

Seattle U stranded nine ‘Lopes on base throughout the contest, seven of which were left in scoring position. At the plate, Griffin Andreychuk (Nanaimo, B.C., Canada), Morgan, and Hurd each collected two hits as SU led, 9-7, in hits.

On the mound, Grant Gunning (Snohomish, Wash.) picked up his first win of the season while Zach Wolf (Dana Hills, Calif.) picked up his fourth save of the season, second of the weekend.

The Redhawks look for the series sweep on Sunday, Apr. 16 with first pitch scheduled for 12 noon at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue, Wash.
