Seattle University baseball (13-9, 2-0 WAC) surrendered an early one-run lead but regained the lead in the second en route to a 7-3 win in the second game of a three-game Western Athletic Conference series vs. Bakersfield (5-17, 0-2 WAC).

Dustin Frailey scored for the ‘Runners on a David Metzgar RBI single in the first inning but the Redhawks would take a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second on back-to-back RBI singles from Max Modeste (Roseville, Calif.) and Dalton Hurd (Bend, Ore.) and a sacrifice fly.

Bakersfield’s Nick Vehlewald hit a two-out RBI single up the middle to cut the Redhawk lead to one, 3-2, but SU extended their lead, 5-2, in the bottom of the frame.

Tacking on a run apiece in back-to-back innings, Seattle U extended their lead, 7-2, on a Modeste RBI single with two outs before Sheldon Stober (Kent, Wash.) scored on a fielder’s choice.

Metzgar added one final run in the top of the seventh on a single up the middle but Austin Hansen (Mukilteo, Wash.) would enter the game and keep the bases loaded in the ninth to preserve the victory, earning the save.

Michael McCann (Vancouver, Wash.) hit 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Redhawks as they outhit CSUB, 13-7.

On the mound, Ted Hammond (Shoreline, Wash.) pitched 6 2/3 innings, striking out six, in the victory while Bakersfield’s Andrew Hansen suffered the loss, giving up seven runs in 5 1/3 innings.

The Redhawks close the series, looking for the sweep, on Saturday, Mar. 26 at 12 noon at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue, Wash.
