Seattle University women’s basketball (8-10, 2-1 WAC) led early and would tie the game near the midpoint, but CSU Bakersfield (5-13, 2-1 WAC) was able to put together runs at key times to earn a 76-68 win in Western Athletic Conference play.

Alyssa Shannon scored first for the Roadrunners before Kaylee Best (Seattle, Wash.) hit a three 12 seconds later to give the Redhawks their first lead, which they would hold through the first three minutes of play. The ‘Runners scored seven straight to take a 9-3 lead before SU responded with a 10-3 run of their own to lead, 13-12, on a Best jumper with 39 seconds remaining in the opening period. After the teams traded the lead six times in the first 10 minutes, Jacinta Beckley (Wellington, New Zealand) put SU back up by one, 15-14, to end the quarter.

The Redhawks tied the game at 19 two minutes into the second quarter in between four-point CSUB leads, the last 24-20 halfway through the second period. Tylinn Carter drove in a layup to lead by six, 36-30, at the half.

Seattle U pulled within one, 38-37, on a 7-2 run capped by a Tal Sahar (Tarzana, Calif.) layup before Erika Williams gave the Roadrunners a double-digit lead, 48-37, with 5:32 left in the third quarter. Beckley sank a three-pointer at the 2:12 mark of the period to pull the Redhawks within two, 53-51, before Addi Walters responded with a three and outscored Seattle U, 7-1, to end the period with a 60-52 lead.

CSUB extended their lead back to double digits, 64-54, two minutes into the final period until Seattle U came back within five, 66-61, over the next two minutes on a 7-2 run. Walters added a three-pointer for the ‘Runners to lead, 69-61, but Bakersfield extended their lead back to seven, 73-66, on a layup from Batabe Zempare. Delanie Parry (Beaverton, Ore.) cut the Redhawk deficit to five, 73-68, on a jumper in the final 35 seconds but Bakersfield was able to close out the win.

Best led the Redhawks with 15 points while Sahar (14) followed closely behind. Despite the loss, SU shot well from the field, shooting 41.5 percent (22-for-53). CSUB’s Walters led all players on the court with 33 points while Zempare recorded a double-double.

Seattle U returns to the road next weekend to face New Mexico State on Thursday, Jan. 21 and UTRGV on Saturday, Jan. 23. The Redhawks return home to host Utah Valley on Thursday, Jan. 28.
