Seattle University women's soccer has been picked to finish third in the Western Athletic Conference in 2012, as voted on by the league's head coaches. Junior Monique Escalera was also named to the WAC preseason all-conference team.
"We were excited to hear Monique was named to the WAC preseason team," said SU head coach Julie Woodward. "She had a very solid spring season in the back for us and demonstrated some great athleticism and leadership that we are looking forward to seeing on the field this fall. The [team] recognition is a huge honor considering we have not yet competed in this conference, and there are some very good teams that we will be seeing this fall."
Fellow newcomer Denver was selected to finish first in the poll, receiving six first place votes. The Pioneers went 16-5-0 in 2011 and finished third in the Sun Belt Conference. Last season's WAC Tournament champion Utah State was voted to finish second, receiving three first place votes.
Seattle U went 12-6-1 in 2011 and return seven starters and 14 letterwinners for the 2012 campaign.
The Redhawks' 2012 season will kick off on August 17 as they host cross-town rival University of Washington at Championship Field at 4 p.m. At the conclusion of the regular season, the six-team conference tournament will take place on the campus of Utah State University in Logan, Utah on November 1-2, 4.
