DENVER – (Oct. 11) Reigning Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Matej Kavas was selected to the 2017-18 Preseason All-WAC Second Team in both a vote of the league's eight head coaches and WAC men's basketball media, the WAC released Wednesday.

The Redhawks were also selected fifth in both the Coaches and Media Polls. Grand Canyon was picked as the preseason favorite in both polls.

Kavas played in 27 games during his rookie season, averaging 8.6 points and 2.9 rebounds per game. His numbers rose during WAC play as he averaged 11.6 points and 3.7 rebounds per game.

Seattle U returns three key players from the 2016-17 squad, including Kavas, sophomore guard Morgan Means and redshirt junior center Aaron Menzies

"When you take over a program, you need to look at the strength of the program already there," said Head Coach Jim Hayford, who enters his first year at the helm of the program. "We will build on our returning core, and then add versatility and depth."

Leading the new faces of the program are a trio of graduate transfers - Jordan Hill (Wisconsin), Richaud Gittens (Weber State) and Josh Hearlihy - all of whom have NCAA Tournament experience at their previous institutions.

The Redhawks officially open the 2017-18 season on the road at Saint Louis on Nov. 10, a game that is part of the 2K Classic Presented by the Wounded Warrior Project. Seattle U's home opener is set for Nov. 12 against Puget Sound in the Connolly Complex.
