BOX SCORE

SPOKANE, Wash. – (Sept. 10) Seattle University men’s soccer won, 2-0, at No. 22 Gonzaga on Sunday afternoon. Cody Gibson scored two goals as the Redhawks beat a ranked foe for the second time and improved to 4-1-0 this season.

“We started better than we did in the last two games,” said Coach Pete Fewing. “We had good possession of the ball and managed the game well. I give the credit to the players-they played hard and got a good win.”

Seattle U controlled the action in the first half, holding possession for the majority of the frame. It held an 8-0 margin in shots and in the 20th minute, the Redhawks capitalized on a Zag miscue. The goalkeeper for the home side looked to clear the ball out of his box, but Medo Youssef was there to intercept the pass just outside the 18-yard box. He sent the ball right to Gibson, who took a clean touch, settled, and looped a shot into the upper right corner for a goal and a 1-0 lead.

In the second half, the hosts worked to tie the contest, but SU was up to the task, pressuring the Zag defense several times. Still holding onto a one-goal edge, Quinn Fahling won a loose ball, which landed in the box in front of the Bulldog goalkeeper. Gibson sprinted into the gap and deposited the ball into the back of the net for a key insurance score at the 69-minute mark.

Josh Adachi recorded his third shutout with two saves in net. SU held a 10-9 edge in shots and 8-5 difference in corner kicks.

SU opens a five-game home stand on Thursday, Sept. 14, as Santa Clara visits Championship Field. The Redhawks own the nation’s longest active home winning streak at 19 games.
